Best Air Purifiers with Washable/Reusable Filters (2026)

Most air purifiers sold with a "washable filter" only let you wash a thin pre-filter. The main filter behind it still gets replaced. A smaller group has a washable main stage: electrostatic media or metal collecting plates that you clean and put back. These are the units usually sold as "filterless" or "no filter replacement." They avoid most filter purchases, but they work differently from HEPA, and some of them may emit ozone.

This guide separates the two groups model by model. We have not tested these units. Every figure below comes from the maker, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) certified list, the ENERGY STAR database, the EPA, or independent reviewers, and we say which. The Short Answer: What "Washable" Really Means

There are four different things behind the words "washable," "permanent," "reusable," and "filterless":

1. Washable electrostatic main filter. A charged honeycomb panel you rinse and reuse. Example: Honeywell's ifD filter in the AirGenius 5. Honeywell bases its "permanent" claim on washing the filter 4 times a year for 5 years.
2. Collecting plates or electrostatic precipitators (ESP). The unit charges particles and collects them on plates or panels you wash. Examples: Airdog's TPA plates and NuWave's Bio-Guard filters. Many "filterless" purifiers work this way.
3. Permanent filter you vacuum, not wash. A fibrous filter that stays in the unit and gets vacuumed. Example: Hamilton Beach TrueAir EverLasting. Water is not part of the routine.
4. Washable pre-filter, disposable main filter. Only the outer mesh or fabric layer is washable. The main filter is replaced on a schedule. Coway, Levoit, Blueair, and Winix work this way.

Some "no filter replacement" products fit none of these. Shark's NeverChange line uses a long-life filter that is not washable (see the box below the picks).

True HEPA cannot be washed. Pleated HEPA media is not designed for water. One independent test measured a 15% to 23% drop in efficiency after a single wash. That is a single test, but makers do not present pleated HEPA filters as washable. The EPA also notes there is no widely accepted definition of "HEPA" for consumer products, so "HEPA-type" or "HEPA-grade" is not a certified class.

The ozone question. Since 2010, portable air cleaners sold in California must be CARB-certified. CARB sorts them into two classes:

• Mechanical: physical filtration only. Per CARB, these "do not generate ozone or ions."
• Electronic: ionizers, electrostatic precipitators, and similar. They must test at no more than 0.050 ppm (50 ppb) of ozone.

CARB certification is a pass/fail ozone and electrical-safety test. CARB states it does not reflect how well a unit cleans the air and does not mean a unit is "safe to use." The EPA says units with ESPs or ionizers may emit ozone, and calls ozone a lung irritant. So "CARB certified" on an electronic unit means "under the limit," not "zero ozone."

The efficiency trade-off. The EPA says electrostatic precipitators often start at 60% or more single-pass removal, and up to 95% depending on airflow. Efficiency is highest when the plates are clean and drops as they load with particles, so the plates must be cleaned, sometimes often. ESPs do not remove gases or odors. The usual True HEPA benchmark is 99.97% at 0.3 microns. Maker capture claims for washable units are measured on different bases and are not comparable to that benchmark or to each other.

Part 1: Washable or Permanent Main Filter

#1 Honeywell AirGenius 5 (HFD320): Washable Main Filter for Small Rooms

The AirGenius 5 has no disposable main filter. Its ifD (intense field dielectric) filter is a charged honeycomb panel. Honeywell calls it a "permanent washable ifD filter and foam pre-filter," and says the permanent claim is based on washing 4 times a year for 5 years.

• What is washable: the ifD filter and the foam pre-filter.
• What is replaced: the carbon K pre-filter for odors, about every 3 months per Honeywell.
• CADR: 161 smoke / 160 dust / 170 pollen CFM (reported AHAM figures).
• Room size: 250 sq ft at 4.8 air changes per hour, which Honeywell describes as AHAM Verifide. The "up to 1,200 sq ft" in the Amazon title is a much lower air-change figure.
• Capture claim: 99.9% of particles 0.3 microns and larger "from the air that passes through the filter" (Honeywell). This is not a True HEPA filter, and the claim is not a HEPA-standard test.
• Noise: Honeywell does not publish a dB figure.
• CARB: listed. The current entry, HFD320V1 (2025), is Mechanical. Older HFD320 entries (2012, 2016) are Electronic. The Amazon listing does not say which version ships.
• ENERGY STAR: not in the current ENERGY STAR database.
• Warranty: 5 years.

Dry the filter fully before you put it back. Honeywell notes it may stay discolored after washing.

Independent opinions differ. One reviewer rates it the best of the washable group but says it still cannot match the best HEPA units. Another found it slow in a room test (93 minutes at top speed in a 728 cu ft room) and judged the technology not there yet.

One listing quirk: the Amazon title says HFD320, but the "Item model number" field says HFD360 (the AirGenius 6). Check the model in the listing before you buy.

Who it suits: small bedrooms or offices, for buyers who want to stop buying main filters and accept a lower CADR than the HEPA picks below.

#2 NuWave OxyPure ZERO: Electrostatic Filters and a Strict Cleaning Schedule

The OxyPure ZERO uses a dual 4-stage system: a stainless pre-filter, two Bio-Guard filters, a Bio-Guard 360, and an ozone-emissions removal filter. The Bio-Guard filters are electrostatic. NuWave's manual puts the cleaning schedule on the indicator lights.

• What is washable: the stainless pre-filters (at least every 2 months) and the Bio-Guard filters (indicator at 3 months, recommended; red at about 6 months, must clean), per the manual.
• What is replaced: the ozone-emissions removal filter. It is vacuum only. The manual says never to immerse, wash, or wipe it with water, and that it must be replaced if it gets wet. NuWave gives no replacement interval.
• CADR: not published by NuWave.
• Room size: NuWave says 1,000 sq ft at 2 air changes per hour and 2,002 sq ft at 1 air change per hour. These are low air-change figures; see the room size guide.
• Capture claim: "up to 100%" of airborne particles as small as 0.1 microns, which NuWave says is Intertek lab certified. This is a maker claim.
• Noise: NuWave's Amazon listing gives 21.4 dB at the lowest setting. No maximum is published.
• CARB: Electronic. The ZERO has several CARB entries, the latest dated 2026-06-30 (models 47906 and 47907). The linked unit is model 47251 (Electronic, 2021).
• ENERGY STAR: not in the current database.
• Warranty: 1 year (manual).

The manual says the Bio-Guard filters carry an 8,000 V charge in operation and must be completely dry, up to 24 hours, before reinstalling. They may discolor and keep an odor after heavy smoke. The manual gives no lifespan figure for them. A larger OxyPure ZERO Plus (model 47602, CARB Electronic) is also sold.

Who it suits: buyers comfortable with an electronic unit and a strict cleaning schedule. NuWave's large-space figures are 1-air-change numbers, so check the room size basis. Our large-room guide covers HEPA options for the same spaces.

#3 NuWave Forever: Newer NuWave Washable Line

The Forever is NuWave's newer 7-stage line, built around the same washable Bio-Guard idea. It is the only washable pick in this guide with figures in the ENERGY STAR database, with one caveat below.

• What is washable: stainless pre-filters, Bio-Guard, and Bio-Guard 360 (manual).
• What is replaced: the ozone-emissions removal filter, vacuum only, same rules as the ZERO.
• CADR and room size: ENERGY STAR lists the 2026 Forever (model 47901) at 279 dust / 283 smoke / 287 pollen CFM and 439 sq ft. The Amazon unit is model 47265 (2024). The same figures may not apply to it.
• Ozone: ENERGY STAR lists 47901 as "Fan and Filter, Ion Generator" with an ozone figure of 2 ppb. NuWave says the unit "lowers ozone levels to 1 ppb," a maker claim.
• Capture claim: 100% of particles down to 0.1 microns (NuWave).
• CARB: Electronic. Model 47265 was listed in 2024; newer Forever models were listed in 2025 and 2026.
• Power and warranty: 60 W, 1 year (manual).

Note the room size gap: ENERGY STAR's 439 sq ft for model 47901 is about a fifth of the 2,002 sq ft that NuWave advertises for the ZERO at 1 air change per hour.

Who it suits: buyers who want the NuWave design with at least one database-listed set of numbers for the line.

#4 Airdog X5+: Washable Collecting Plates

Airdog's TPA system charges incoming particles and collects them on metal plates. The X5+ is Airdog's current model, based on the original X5, which is sold out on Airdog's site. Airdog says "no replacement filters are needed."

• What is washable: the collecting plates (soap and water, dishwasher safe on low water temperature, per Airdog) and the pre-filter (rinse or vacuum). The wireframe must not touch water.
• What is reused: the catalyst filter, which Airdog says regenerates in 1 hour of sunlight.
• Cleaning interval: every 12 weeks per Airdog's X5+ page. The X5 shows "-C-" on its display when cleaning is due.
• CADR: Airdog's comparison table gives a max CADR of 210 CFM. The X5 Amazon listing says 200 CFM.
• Room size: 1,600 sq ft at 1 air change per hour; Airdog recommends 404-540 sq ft at 3-4 air changes per hour.
• Capture claim: particles down to 0.0146 microns (Airdog). A maker claim, not a HEPA-standard test.
• Noise: Airdog's X5+ page gives no dB figure.
• CARB: no entry is listed under the X5+ name. The X5 (KJ300F-X5) is listed as Electronic. Airdog says the X5+ "adheres to strict CARB standards."
• ENERGY STAR: Airdog's site claims it, but no Airdog model is in the ENERGY STAR database.
• Warranty: 1 year on Airdog's site; the Amazon X5+ listing says 24 months.

For smaller rooms, the Airdog X3 uses the same plate design. Its Amazon listing gives a CADR of 120 CFM and 22 dB in sleep mode. CARB lists it (KJ200F-X3) as Electronic.

Who it suits: buyers who want washable plates instead of any cartridge and accept active ionization and a 12-week cleaning routine.

#5 Hamilton Beach TrueAir EverLasting (20150): Permanent Filters, Vacuum Only

This is Hamilton Beach's newer permanent-filter model. The older TrueAir 04386A is no longer available on Amazon. It is the only permanent-filter pick that CARB lists only as Mechanical, so per CARB's definition it generates no ozone or ions. Its filters are permanent but not washable.

• What is reused: two EverLasting filters that Hamilton Beach says need "a quick vacuum every 12 months." The maker page does not call them washable.
• What is replaced: two carbon filters, every 3 months (model 22151).
• CADR: 111 smoke / 123 dust / 121 pollen CFM, which Hamilton Beach says comes from independent testing.
• Room size: 172 sq ft at 5 air changes per hour; 827 sq ft at 1 air change per hour.
• Capture claim: 99.9% of particles as small as 0.3 microns "that enter the filter" (Hamilton Beach).
• Noise: as low as 24 dB in sleep mode (Hamilton Beach).
• CARB: Mechanical, listed 2025-02-18.
• ENERGY STAR: not in the database.

Who it suits: small rooms, for buyers who want no ionizer and no washing, and accept a quarterly carbon filter.

Part 2: Washable Pre-Filter Only

These four all use a disposable main filter. The Coway, Levoit, and Winix use HEPA-type media; the Blueair uses HEPASilent, which combines mechanical and electrostatic filtration and which CARB lists as Electronic. The washable pre-filter catches larger debris like hair, dust, and lint, so the main filter loads more slowly. You still replace the main filter on the maker's schedule. Do not wash it. #6 Coway Airmega 250 / 250S: Mechanical HEPA, No Ionizer

• What is washable: the pre-filter.
• What is replaced: a combined Green True HEPA and carbon filter, about every 12 months.
• CADR: 249 smoke / 261 dust / 230 pollen CFM (Coway).
• Room size: 930 sq ft at 2 air changes per hour (1,860 sq ft at 1).
• Noise: 22-54 dB, three manual fan speeds (Coway).
• CARB: Mechanical, recertified 2025-12-12. No ionizer.
• Warranty: 3 years.

A newer Airmega 250 Art variant has different figures: 235 / 240 / 293 CFM and 22-51 dB (CARB Mechanical).

Who it suits: buyers who want mechanical filtration only, with a solid CADR for the size, and accept a yearly filter change.

• What is washable: the fabric pre-filter, which catches hair before it reaches the main filter, useful in pet households.
• What is replaced: the HEPASilent particle and carbon filter, every 6-9 months, tracked by Blueair's RealTrack usage alerts.
• Filtration: HEPASilent, which Blueair describes as mechanical plus electrostatic filtration.
• CADR: 435 smoke / 452 dust / 450 pollen CFM (Blueair). ENERGY STAR lists 443 / 457 / 450.
• Room size: 674 sq ft (Blueair); ENERGY STAR lists 687 sq ft.

• What is replaced: the main filter, about every 6-12 months. Levoit describes it as a HEPA-grade filter rated 99.97% at 0.3 microns, combined with activated carbon. Levoit changed its HEPA labeling in 2023 and no longer markets it as True HEPA.
• CADR: 250 CFM (Levoit).
• Room size: about 388 sq ft at 4.8 air changes per hour.
• Noise: as low as 23 dB, up to 54 dB (Levoit).
• CARB: Mechanical (2022).

• Noise: 23.5 dB on low.
• Ionizer: optional PlasmaWave.
• CARB: Electronic (2024), because of PlasmaWave.
• ENERGY STAR: not in the database.

Long-Life but Not Washable: Shark NeverChange

Shark's BreatheClear with NeverChange (HP162) shows up in many "no filter replacement" searches. It is not washable. Shark says "zero filter changes for up to 6 years," without a test basis on the page. Only its Debris Defense screen is cleanable. Shark gives 750 sq ft at 1 air change per hour and 99.98% capture at 0.1-0.2 microns. CADR and noise are not stated on the page. CARB lists the HP162 family as Mechanical (2026).

How to Choose

Check the room size basis. A figure at 1 air change per hour can be four or five times the figure at 4 to 5 air changes. AHAM's rule of thumb: smoke CADR should be at least two-thirds of the room's area in square feet, with 8 ft ceilings. A 250 sq ft room needs about 167 CFM.

Decide on ozone. If you want no ions and no ozone generation, pick a unit CARB lists as Mechanical: the Hamilton Beach EverLasting, Coway Airmega 250, or Levoit Vital 200S-P. The Honeywell's current CARB entry is also Mechanical, but older HFD320 entries are Electronic and the listing does not say which version ships. The Airdog X5, both NuWaves, Blueair, and the Winix are listed as Electronic.

Count what you will still buy. Most picks here still have a consumable. Honeywell needs a K pre-filter, NuWave an ozone-removal filter replaced periodically (and at once if it gets wet), and Hamilton Beach carbon filters. The pre-filter group needs a full main filter every 6 to 12 months.

Match the cleaning routine. Washable main filters only work as rated when cleaned on schedule. If you will not wash plates every few months, a pre-filter model is simpler.

"Washable filter" covers two different products. If the main stage is washable, as on the Honeywell AirGenius 5, NuWave OxyPure ZERO and Forever, and Airdog X5+, you buy far fewer filters, but you clean on a schedule, accept electrostatic technology, and in most cases an electronic unit under CARB's ozone limit. The Hamilton Beach EverLasting is the mechanical, vacuum-only option. If only the pre-filter is washable, as on the Coway, Blueair, Levoit, and Winix, you have a normal HEPA-type purifier with an easier routine and higher CADR.
